
John Gutmann was born in 1905 and was born in Breslau, Germany. He was a Jew and left the Nazi Germany to America in 1933. He created the John Gutmann Fellowship Award in San Francisco. He wasn't only a photographer, he was also a painter. He has his art and pictures published in Massachusetts, Chicago, Ohio, Iowa, Switzerland, New York City, Boston, Amsterdam and San Francisco. He died when he was 93 years old on June 12, 1998. He studied painting in the State of Academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau, Germany and got a bachelors degree. After he moved to Berlin and got a masters degree in the State Institute for Higher Education. In New York City he worked with a picture agency Pix Inc. After that he worked at San Francisco State College teaching art. Some of his pictures are in a book called "The Restless Decade" by Harry N. Abrams.
