my favorite cover

"Just before her intimate photos were hacked--and splashed across the Web--Jennifer Lawrence posed topless for Patrick Demarchelier for the cover of Vanity Fair's November issue. As part of the accompanying cover story, she decided to break her silence about one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood this year. The Guardian called her salvo "the end of the 'shamed starlet.'" So strong was the outpouring of social-media support for Lawrence's stance that The New York Times reported on the fact "fans took to Twitter to applaud her." Demarchelier's striking photos of the Hunger Games actress also helped spark a thoughtful debate about a woman's right to reveal her body. Lawrence (and the V.F. cover) made her message loud and clear: "It's my body, and it should be my choice."

This is my favorite because it shows that she is a powerful woman and that she is still strong even after what got leaked of her. The light of this portrait is even and there is no shadow. There is no uneven parts of this picture it is equal and they used a background that was colorful and creative while not taking the attention away from the subject. Her necklace also doesn't take the attention away from her it just adds to her being the subject.

magazine tips

5 things I should be thinking of:

1. Use aesthetic backgrounds
2. Use an aesthetic background while using a background that makes your subject pop out
3. Use different angles and lighting
4. Use colors
5. Don't use too much emotion but still use emotion

fashion photography

5 changes in the models face:
1. The make up covered all of her face so it looked different
2. On the computer, they moved her eyes down
3. They made her eyes bigger
4. They made her head more circular
5. They made her lips have more of a form or curve

5 changes in the models body:
1. They made her stomach skinnier
2. They made her legs longer
3. Her skin got lighter
4. They made her neck longer and her face more circular
5. They gave her butt more for a formation or made it look thicker

Changes made on the computer:
1. They made her legs skinnier
2. They made her upper body smaller including her arms
3. They made her boobs bigger and stomach smaller
4. They got rid of her wrinkles or lines
5. They made her body skinner so her boobs and butt would be more noticeable
6. She had short hair but they drew longer hair on her
7. They added volume to her hair
8. Her fingers got skinnier
9. Her skin got lighter

4. I do not think it is acceptable because you are completely changing their bodies and face. It's another way of saying your body isn't good enough, we are going to completely change it to make it more attractive to people. It's okay to add volume to their hair or make their skinner tanner or a little lighter, but to completely change their body and make they look like a Barbie doll is not okay. You are setting higher expectations for girls to follow to be pretty when really we don't have any expectations to follow in the first place.

5.

6.It is okay to change some of their features, like I said before, it is okay to change their skin color a little bit or add volume to their hair or make their face more clear. That's okay, but to completely change the way they look by shaping their face or body and moving stuff around is not okay.

7. The difference between fashion photography and photojournalism is that we don't completely change the way the subject looks in the photo.

8.

9. You are showing us these videos to show that photography has a lot of photoshop involved and changing. It is another way of photography.

10. None of the videos are of guys because guys don't have much of an expectation to follow. Guys haven't been told that they need to wear makeup to look pretty and they need a body figure to attract girls. Guys have had expectations about what girls look like and girls have had low expectations about what they actually do in life but when it comes to looks we have to look absolutely perfect and those expectations are set so high that we get so insecure about our looks or bodies if something is "off."

american soldier

1. The most powerful image to me I think is the one of Ian and his army buddies sitting on a bed hugging. I think that's the most powerful because I forget that they make friends in the army and that when they go into war, they are risking their lives and you might lose your friend. You never know if that'll be your last goodbye.

2.
set 1-at home- image 1 to image 3
set 2-basic training- image 4 to image 13
set3-Iraq- image 14 to image 27
image 28- back home

3. The set of image that I find the most powerful is the one in basic training because you can see him transform. You can see him go from the way he was back home in Denver to him transforming into a soldier, in a completely different environment and turning into a completely different person. You can se him preparing for what is coming.

4. The images work to tell a story by showing where he starts in the beginning, back at home getting ready to go to the army, to him going to the training. In the training you get to watch him transform and get ready to go to Iraq. The next part of the story is seeing him Iraq and you get to see that his training is put to the test and you see him do what he was trained for, then after all that you get to see him go home.

5. The verbs are in past tense

self portrait and portraits pt.1

tips:
Candids: Being Unobtrusive
You may want to make photographs of people going about their business—vendors in a market, a crowd at a sports event, the line at a theater. You don't want them to appear aware of the camera. Many times people will see you, then ignore you because they have to concentrate on what they are doing. You want the viewers of the image to feel that they are getting an unguarded, fly-on-the-wall glimpse into the scene.
Alert your perspective
Most portraits are taken with the camera at (or around) the eye level of the subject. While this is good common sense – completely changing the angle that you shoot from can give your portrait a real WOW factor.

I like this photo because it has your subject off to the side and you can see that theres nature behind him. You can see that the ground is red and it goes on into the forest. You can see that there is a lot behind him.
I like this photo because there is a lot of green. I also like this because it's a picture of a photographer and he's taking a picture of something but you can't see it in the photo, because of that this picture seems mysterious.
I like this photo because the man is part of the background. His shirt shows the division of the ocean and the sky. He also blends in with the ocean and the sky. I chose this picture because it was very eye catching to me, I don't see a lot of pictures like this.
I like this photo because you can see in the photographers face that there is something not in the photo catching her eye. I can think that she wants to take a picture of it because she looks interested. I chose this photo because it too was mysterious because something not in the photo is catching her eye.
I like this photo because it's a picture of Marilyn Monroe. She has a prop and that is a piece of paper that she's reading and I chose this photo because something caught her eye so it's mysterious.
I like this photo because it's a picture of Katy Perry and I chose this picture because something caught her eye so its a mysterious photo.

Africa and abandoned theme parks

1. This article is about a photographer, Nick Brandt, going to Africa to take pictures. He's passionate about animals in their state of being and is doesn't like how all the animals in Africa are dying off. He takes pictures of those animals to try to stop or make an impact on not killing off the East African Wildlife.
2.

This is a picture of a mother Lion holding her cub in her mouth with the cub just hanging there. This picture does not have any merges and he used the simplicity rule. The simplicity rule is focusing on the subject and making the picture simple. He used this because the background is plain with the sky and the dead trees and rocks in the back so nothing catches your eye away form the mom and cub.
3. Nick Brandt uses a medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses. This is important because those type of lenses zoom in on the subject and makes you feel like you're close to the animal. Other  photographers use those, but not him.
4. He takes these pictures because he's obsessed with animals and he hopes that they'll memorialize the vanishing or killing off East African Wildlife.
"There is something profoundly iconic, mythological even, about the animals of East and southern Africa. There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa—those vast, green rolling plains punctuated by graphically perfect acacia trees under the huge skies." -Nick Brandt

1. Out of all the theme parks, I want to go to the Koka Family Land, Shiga, Japan. I want to go there because nature is staring to take over the theme park because it has been abandoned. Those would be some interesting pictures because there will be a lot of vines on rides and moldy areas of the theme park.

2.

3. 5 other unusual places photographers would like taking pictures would be abandoned buildings, alley ways, schools, gardens and skating rinks.

4.
It would be fun to shoot in abandoned buildings because there are rooms that are filled with other peoples memories and stuff so you can kind of see what kind of building it was. Its like a big adventure. I would take pictures of old lights and broken windows and if the building is covered by nature I would take pictures of that.

academic post-shoot reflection and critique

1. The challenges that I faced during this photo shoot was that some of the teachers didn't want me in their class for a long time so I felt rushed and I didn't have time to take a good photo in that classroom. Another challenge was that I couldn't find a classroom that was doing anything because most of them were just sitting and listening to the teacher or writing notes.

2. During the shoot, I kept thinking about focusing the camera because I didn't want a blurry picture. To fix a picture if it was blurry I would do auto focus or if that wasn't working, I would just fix it myself. When I was taking picture of the art kids, I wanted to get their painting in the photo and them making the painting so I had to find an angle to get both of them in there, but I had to focus on the painting happening.

3. What I would do differently was once again take my time taking pictures and I also would definitely take more pictures than I did.

4. The things I would do the same would be to explore the classes that I did explore.

5. I think balance and rule of thirds would be the easiest rules to achieve on the next photo shoot.

6. I think lines would be the hardest rule to follow on the next photo shoot.

7. The rule that I'm still not completely sure on is simplicity, I just need a couple reminders on what simplicity means but I put what simplicity is in my notes on my phone because I always have my phone with me.

academic post-shoot reflection

The composition rule I followed was balance. The subject of this photo is the paintbrush and the hand holding the paintbrush. Its sort of clear what the subject is and to make it more clear I could've taken the picture at another angle of flipped the camera so it wasn't horizontal but vertical.
The composition rule that I followed was lines because the tiles lead up to the people playing their instruments.  The subjects of the photo are the Orchestra people and I think I made it clear that they are the subject. I don't have one specific subject.
The composition rule I think I followed was rule of thirds because I have room on the left side of the picture because she has room to continue to draw. The subject of the photo is the girl, Haley Peck and I made it obvious and clear that she is the subject because no one else is in the photo.

aperture, shutter speed and ISO

F2.8 aperture picture
F16 aperture picture
1. we relate aperture to our eyes
2. the smaller the aperture f-stop, the higher the aperture size
3. aperture impacts death field by making the object you are focusing on, sharper. It makes the subject pop out more of the photo.

slow shutter speed
fast shutter speed

a) booth in the middle of the yard- night; high beginning; slow
b) food booth outside- night; high beginning; slow
c) stars performing inside the gym- night high beginning- high
d) students dancing in the center of the courtyard- night high beginning high
e) people streaming in front of the doors- night- high beginning- slow
f) basketball booth- night; high beginning; high
ISO 200

ISO 6400
1. the advantage of using a higher ISO in a game is the picture seems louder and you're at a sporting event so loud is always better and your picture will get brighter if you don't have enough light like at a football game.
2. use low ISO when you have bright lightening so you can have a high quality picture or when you want some objects to look like ghosts
3. use high ISO when theres not enough lighting so you can take a quick picture

1. the aperture settings they have are 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22
2. the shutter speed settings are 1 sec, 1/60 sec and 1/4000 sec
3. the ISO settings are 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800 and 25600

unusual and interesting photos

Part 1
1. I think his photos are very interesting and different than most that I've seen. They are very cool and nice to look at.
2. I think he just used something on his camera to take pictures while he moving side to side or back and forth. Maybe he used some kind of editing app or something to layer the picture.
3. I think one thing that would be good to take a picture of is when there is the Trail of Lights down at Zilker Park, there's this light shape that makes kind of a cone. At the very top is where the lights meet and there are different stands of lights going off that and it makes a cone so you can stand under it and see. You would not get as easy access because it only happens around christmas time, but it would also be easy because you're going to be walking around to see the lights after you wait in line.

Part 2
I picked this photo as one of my favorites because the photographer captured this photo while the football player was in the air, jumping to get the touchdown. I found this under Sports Action, it won 3rd place. I think it was a combination of both what the photographer did and the subject that was going through the judges head. I think the photographer had to think quick if he wanted to get that picture because he wasn't going to be in the air for long.
I picked this photo as one of my favorite because it just looks really cool how the moon is right in front of the sun. I found this photo under Environment and it got 1st place. The photographers angle of the picture is what caught my eye. I think it was what the photographer did that was going through the judges mind because the photographer had to get it in that moment with the right angle.

Academics and service photo

My favorite photo is one of this tall, blonde, teenager that's a cheerleader looking down, smiling and hugging this little little girl at a football game. The little girl looks like she was about to go in for the hug more and the cheerleader was wrapping her arms around her. I picked this photo because I see a lot of the varsity cheerleaders work with younger kids who want to be cheerleaders just like them and the older cheerleaders are always nice and supportive to them and I felt like this photo showed that. This photo showed happiness and love and kindness that was given. I feel like this picture was a merger photo because the photographer got some of the another cheerleader behind them.

1. I think I could take pictures in an biology classroom, spanish classroom or the yearbook class right next door. I will also find it in theatre or tech theatre or the hospitality classroom.
2. I would like to go into Profe Espinosa's classroom or Spiros biology classroom or any biology classroom. I would also like to go into Fraziers class for hospitality and Gomez's classroom for tech theatre.
3. I will just ask the students to not pay attention to me and to keep working on their project or assignment. I might ask them to pretend they're writing or to hold a pose for me if it looks good but my angle isn't.

Filling the frame

This picture fills the frame because the kids are all around the table looking at the fog and such and the photographer was focusing on that and it takes up the whole or the majority of the picture.

Action and Emotion

This  picture shows action and emotion because the two girls working on this project are showing shock and excitement because whatever they were woking on kind of exploded. You can see that it exploded because you can see some of it up in the air and them getting shocked because they didn't expect that to happen.

The story

This picture shows the best story because it clearly shows that these people are working to give these people food by holding out food and they are wearing gloves so they won't get anything in the food. They also have napkins and pots for the food. I think the story in this picture is that the people on the left are hungry and need food and the people on the right are helping provide food.

photo manipulation and ethics

A. The passage is about photographers using so much photoshop and how much people think has violations. They think it has violations because the photoshopped missiles and other people.

B. I think photo editing is both unethical and acceptable, it really depends on what they edit in the picture. If they edit another missile, like in the passage, I do not think that is acceptable because those are weapons and they are very dangerous and maybe adding one more to the picture will make the other country think they can't handle them. If there's a person in the back off the picture that isn't important and you don't want in the picture, then that's okay. I do not think adding people who weren't there in the picture is okay though. For me, it really depends on what they are editing and how the picture looks in the end.

This is the most unethical picture because they photoshopped Oprahs head onto Ann Margret's body. This is not okay because in a way you're saying that Ophras body isn't good or perfect, it's not the body that people want to see. Also because you're just using someone else's body as a tool when no, that's their body respect it. Don't use someone else's head and put it on their body. It's using someone else's body as a tool and it's saying that Oprahs body isn't the body that can make the cover of the magazine.

This is the least unethical picture because all they did was edit her teeth. They made her teeth look better. I still don't like the idea of them editing her teeth because they're saying she has ugly teeth but it doesn't change that much of her appearance and not that much people would pay attention to her teeth because her smile doesn't show much of her teeth.

great black and white photographs pt. 2

John Gutmann was born in 1905 and was born in Breslau, Germany. He was a Jew and left the Nazi Germany to America in 1933. He created the John Gutmann Fellowship Award in San Francisco. He wasn't only a photographer, he was also a painter. He has his art and pictures published in Massachusetts, Chicago, Ohio, Iowa, Switzerland, New York City, Boston, Amsterdam and San Francisco. He died when he was 93 years old on June 12, 1998. He studied painting in the State of Academy of Arts and Crafts in Breslau, Germany and got a bachelors degree. After he moved to Berlin and got a masters degree in the State Institute for Higher Education. In New York City he worked with a picture agency Pix Inc. After that he worked at San Francisco State College teaching art. Some of his pictures are in a book called "The Restless Decade" by Harry N. Abrams.

post shoot reflection

1. The challenges that I faced when I took the happy, bowie, metal and square picture was I had to find a picture of those 4 while also following the rules of Photography. I also would have a good idea for a picture but I couldn't find a way to take the picture as I envisioned it.

2. The technical aspect that I kept thinking about was focusing the picture. I would press the button so that it would auto focus. After it would focus a couple times I realized that the picture didn't look as good as I thought it would so I would go at different angles.

3. If I could do this assignment again, I would take more time to take my pictures. I rushed through taking the pictures so I would get back to class on time but I had more time than I thought so I would go back and take my time taking the picture and really focus on if it's tilted or if there's something in the corner that ruins the picture. I would also explore the school more.

4. The things I would do the same is work by myself. I would like to work by myself because I didn't rush as much taking my pictures and I had more time to find good things to take pictures of.

5. I accomplished lines and frame.

6. I am kind of interested in working with these prompts again because they were kind of easy and simple. I also would like to because you can find those things easily around the school. I also would not want to because we didn't really get to around the school more and I also would like to go into classes to take pictures of people.

http://douglasphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com

Two things I liked about the pictures he took was that most of them had a simple background so you know what you're focusing on in the photo. I also liked how his pictures weren't out of focus.
One thing he could've improved was when he took the pictures of his friend on happy, he could've had a less distracting background. The background looks good, but it's kind of distracting from the person.
