nut graf

A nut graf tells the reader what the writer is up to. It's a paragraph that says what the story is about and why you should read it. It tells the reader why they should care about the story, supporting material to show you why the story is important, why the story is timely and it's a transition from the lead to the rest of the story.
It is called a nut graf because a nut contains the kernel and to the story thats the theme. In the nut graf you don't give away the ending of the story, address some questions readers might have and give them a good reason why they should read the story.
